65% of broadband households have a game console, PS3 and Xbox 360 lead

The number of households in the United States who have broadband internet access and an internet capable game console has grown quickly over the last few years thanks to the PS3 and Xbox 360's multimedia capabilities according to a new report from research firm Parks Associates.

"PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have higher connectivity rates among the current generation of consoles, showing the power of multimedia offerings and popular game franchises in getting gamers online," said Pietro Macchiarella, Research Analyst, Parks Associates. "Despite the Wii's wireless capabilities, it has been less successful in getting users online due to less compelling online games and multimedia content. However, with its large installed base, it still is a significant player."

Parks Associates predicts that more than 260 million consoles will be connected to the internet worldwide by 2015. This should setup an interesting competition with cable and satellite providers as consoles continue to become more connected and offer a greater variety of services. There's already a movement to 'cut the cable' thanks in part to more options and the downturn in the economy although there's a varying level of success depending on the users.
