7m WiMAX subscribers by 2009

On June 24, 2004, the IEEE approved 802.16REVd as IEEE 802.16-2004, and the final edited standard will be published in late July. The new standard should encourage further development and innovation in fixed broadband wireless solutions, according to the analysts.

“This standard is exciting news for the industry,” said Yuanzhe Cai, senior analyst at Parks Associates. “However, interoperability test and certification process both take time and on average carriers spend six months trialing new equipment, and therefore the market is unlikely to see volume commercial deployment until 2006."
