Cable wants to be a player

In video games, cable companies see a lucrative business with several options for profit. The video game industry generated $12 billion in revenue last year, according to Parks Associates, a Dallas market research firm. Most significant to cable companies was the $1.1 billion gamers spent on online services like subscriptions to Microsoft's Xbox Live.

That's expected to grow to $3.9 billion by 2009, according to the data. Michael Cai, Parks' director of broadband and gaming, said gamers are more likely than other consumers to sign up for other entertainment products, giving cable providers a huge incentive to offer game-related content along with their broadband lines.
