Chromecast defeats Apple TV in streaming device war, eyes Roku next

The figures are in: when it comes to streaming devices for HDTVs, Google’s Chromecast stick has defeated Apple TV in the war for sales volume.

Chromecast, a simple little stick that plugs into the USB port of an HDTV, has had 20 percent of the total streaming device market share sales for the first three quarters of the year. The research, conducted by Parks Associates, revealed that Apple TV, the Cupertino company’s streaming set-top box, only captured 17 percent of the market share during the same period of time.

However, when it comes to who rules the roost, Roku is still the market leader. The company’s streaming device netted a total of 29 percent of shares, though this has declined from 2013’s much more impressive 45 percent market share. New entrants like Google Chromecast – and Amazon’s Fire TV devices, which have captured around 10 percent of industry market share this year – have been eating away at Roku’s once-generous lead.
