More than 8 million smart meters installed in US

SmartMetersThe share of smart meters in the United States has grown to more than 6 percent of the total – up from 4.7 percent at the end of 2008 according to Parks Associates, a research firm. To date more than 8.3 million of the devices have been installed.

A new report released by Parks Associates believes that number will approach 33 million within 2 years. The group compiled the report by studying smart meter usage by a number of American utilities. A report released by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in December of last year found that 4.7 percent of all utility meters were the intelligent type.

Massive deployment efforts that are scheduled to take place over the next couple of years will account for the explosive growth expected by 2011. Hundreds of small utilities at the local level will carry out smart meter initiatives of their own according to Bill Ablondi, director of home systems research at Parks Associates. He said there should be 13.6 million in place by the end of the year.
