Now showing: Simple home theaters

Welcome to the small new world of home theaters. Once the playthings of gearheads and the wealthy, home theaters are going slim and affordable as manufacturers try to attract a new breed of casual buyers. They're no longer limited to specialty audiovisual shops, either. Home theaters are sold at most big electronics stores in the area, even furniture outlets such as Nebraska Furniture Mart and Benchmark.

“For under $2,000 — actually for under $1,500 — you can get yourself a very capable system,” said Bill Ablondi, a director at Parks Associates, a market research firm in Dallas focused on high-tech industries.
