Protection One on the rocks, or rebound

Security Systems NewsFor some in the security industry, the recent turn of events have raised eyebrows about the future of the alarm company. Its acquisition binge that advanced the company to one of the largest in North America and broadened its reach outside the continent has since come to a halt.

"The main problem they're having is they're having growing pains," said Steven Triolet, security analyst with Parks Associates, Dallas. "They've acquired a lot of companies in the last two to three years. The restructuring has presented some problems."  Triolet said most companies do not grow as fast as Protection One. In the company's 1998 annual report, it listed six notable alarm company acquisitions in 1998 that added more than 500,000 monitoring subscribers.

"The company is secure as far as providing services and I think they will rebound and be a tough competitor for the top providers, ADT, SecurityLink and Brinks," said Triolet.
