Rise Of The Smart TV As 70 Million Predicted in US Homes By 2017

Although the smart TV set has it’s critics, there is no stopping the proliferation of the internet connected TV set. New research by Parks Associates predicts that by 2017 there will be 70 million smart TV households in the US.

The company say that this year there will be 175 million US consumers who watch online video, this number will grow to 191 million by the year 2017. 70 million households will own a smart TV by then, and according to Parks, is still the most used platform for watching video.

Speaking for Parks, Heather Way, Senior Analyst said, “The TV is still the most-popular and most-used platform for video viewing—over 40% of TV owners watch more than 10 hours of video per week on the device.”

Parks also found that ad effectiveness was greater on a Smart TV. 25% of smart TV app users remember watching advertising, and a massive 84% responded to that ad.

Heather continued, “The rise of OTT video viewing on smart TVs presents a new channel for content owners to sustain and grow their viewing audience, particularly in a marketplace that continually propagates fragmentation. The ability to leverage the mass reach of the first screen and its interactive components drives the scale and performance of a video asset.”
