Roku raises $25M as set-top box competition grows

A report over the summer from Parks Associates showed Roku and Google's Chromecast were the two most popular streaming devices sold in the U.S. in 2013, moving about 3.8 million each. Google's offering was only introduced in the middle of the year, making its surge most impressive. Apple was No. 3, selling a little over 2 million of its Apple TV boxes.

Globally through the end of 2013, Parks reported that Apple was No. 1 with 20 million of its Apple TV boxes sold since they launched in 2007. Roku's total sales since its launch were 8 million by the end of 2013, but it only sells in a handful of countries — the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and Ireland.
