Roughly one-third of German and French broadband households and 45 percent of UK broadband households have purchased a smartphone in the last six months, according to a study by Parks Associates European. These devices are leading the increase in connected and mobile CE adoption among Western European households, which is opening new options for service providers in security and energy offerings.

Already, 10-12 percent of broadband households in the UK and France own a home control system, where they can control a device such as a thermostat or security camera via a smartphone or PC. Safety and security applications resonate with European consumers, but aversion to monthly fees means providers need to offer different flavours of service, from self-monitoring options to professional services, in order to attract new consumers and build recurring revenues.
