Smartphones Not The Top Gifts of the Holiday Season

New research from Parks Associates shows that smartphones were not the hottest gifts of this past holiday shopping season.

Gaming consoles and tablets are the most popular consumer electronics gift purchases for family members, the new report shows.

A 4Q 2013 survey of U.S. broadband households revealed that 47% of game-console shoppers and 45% of tablet shoppers planned to buy these products as gifts for a household member.

“Before the economic downturn, more consumers were buying these devices as outside gifts, but following the Great Recession, CE shoppers now like to keep these gifts close to home,” says John Barrett, director of Consumer Analytics at Parks Associates.

“Tablets and game consoles are two of the top-three CE gifts this holiday season, but only 14-15% of the shoppers for these devices are gifting them to people outside the household,” he adds. “Over 75% of the gift purchases for these devices are for a family member in the household.”
