The Broadband Race: Cable operators shouldn't smugly think that they have it locked up
A new report by Parks Associates of Dallas looks at cable modems vs. DSL in four key markets: New York, Atlanta, San Jose, and Phoenix. Based on 6,600 interviews in these markets, the report concludes that:
Consumers are more aware of cable-modem service than DSL. However, those aware of both find DSL more desirable than cable-modem service.
Current dial-up Internet users are more likely to subscribe to DSL than to cable modems when they upgrade to "always-on" broadband.
While satisfaction levels for both cable modem and DSL service are about equal, a price cut on either side would possibly prove more harmful to cable than to DSL in terms of defectors.
