Top 10 media companies include 6 locals

New York City-area companies were a major presence on a list of top 25 media firms released by communications analytics firm SNL Kagan: nine of the 25—including six of the top ten—are headquartered in the region. But Colorado-based Liberty Media Corp. overtook Disney for the No. 1 spot.

The rankings are based on net income. 21st Century Fox (No. 2), Time Warner (No. 4) and Viacom (No. 5) crept into the top five. Fox's net income increased more than fivefold from 2012, the second largest of any company on the list, behind just New York-based AMC Networks (No. 15), known for its popular television shows Mad Men and Breaking Bad, which saw net income increase more than sevenfold in the same time.

"Technological advances have dramatically expanded when, where, and how we can watch video," said John Barrett, director of consumer analytics at Parks Associates, a market research and consulting firm. "People are not just watching video on TVs anymore but on computers, smartphones and, most recently, tablets. Data shows they are squeezing in more viewing time by using these devices. The trend has benefited the media companies by enhancing the value of the content they produce."

"[Companies] now have the right to sell their wares not just on one screen but four screens, creating more opportunities for additional revenues," said Mr. Barrett.
