AT&T to pay $1.925 billion for spectrum licenses from Qualcomm

San Diego-based Qualcomm announced that it would be shutting down its subsidiary, FLO TV, in March 2011, freeing up the spectrum that AT&T agreed to purchase. AT&T and Qualcomm expect to close the sale in the second half of 2011.

"The spectrum is one of the fundamental ways to address congestion issues in the U.S.," said Harry Wang, director of mobile product research at Dallas-based market research firm Parks Associates.

Spectrum has become increasingly precious, since it is a scarce resource, Wang said. He expects to see wireless providers "bid aggressively" at a spectrum auction to be held by the Federal Communications Commission in 2011.
