Western Digital Bows HD Media Player
By 2014 the number of Internet-connected devices in homes worldwide will hit 4 billion, up from around 1 billion today, according to research from Parks Associates.
“By the time we hit 2014 we’re looking at a net add of 1 billion a year,” said Kurt Scherf, VP and principal analyst for Parks, in a presentation.
“I think connected Blu-ray players are going to be a hit, because the price keeps dropping,” he said. Among those with a connected Xbox 360 console, 43% are watching online video on a monthly basis, compared with 39% for those with a PlayStation 3, Scherf said.
All these connected devices will mean a boon for content owners: by 2014, Parks Associates estimates that online video revenue will top $5 billion, with connected gaming consoles responsible for half of the earnings.
