US consumer spending on video streaming services drops 25%

The amount was identified in research from Parks Associates that showed the amount have fallen by 25% on the period between Q3 2022 and Q1 2021.

Forty-five percent of US internet households now have five or more OTT services, and their streaming activities influence spending on other services – 60% of households that recently upgraded their broadband service report streaming as the reason for the upgrade.

US pay-TV to decline by 27% in 10 years

Parks Associates says its forecast will represent the lowest penetration in a decade, representing a 27% fall.

“There has been substantial innovation over the years, but streaming’s debut changed the trajectory of the modern video service industry,” said Parks Associates.

Parks Associates data indicates that OTT subscription services average a 48% churn rate in the first quarter of 2022, which is a ten percent increase in just two years.

Subscriptions account for nearly 86% of US internet TV and movie spending

New research from Parks Associates finds that subscriptions, formerly representing just over half of total online video spending in 2012, now account for nearly 86% of all internet spending on TV and movies.

22% of US broadband homes watch terrestrial TV

Approximately 22% of US broadband households use an antenna to watch over-the-air broadcasts, according to Parks Associates.

Households with both antennas and pay TV subscribe to multiple OTT video services and are more likely to own connected entertainment devices than are average broadband households or pay-TV-only households.
