New research from Parks Associates found the number of broadband cord cutters in the U.S. has risen over the past year, with operators missing out on billions in revenue as a result.

The firm’s latest figures show there are now 13.9 million home internet cord cutters in the country, up from just over 12 million in March 2021. His comments appear to reflect a broader trend in the U.S. broadband market. A new report released by analyst company Parks Associates on Wednesday showed that the percentage of households with standalone broadband service reached 41% in Q1 2021, up from 33% in Q1 2018. The cost of this service has risen 64% over the past decade, rising from $39 per month per household in 2011 to $64 in 2021. The report was based off a survey of 10,000 U.S. broadband households.

Fixed broadband service providers may want to reconsider their price plans and improve their customer service if they want to keep their customers from cutting the cord.

Do-it-yourself security systems will cause some shifts in the residential security market as more than two million broadband homes will have a self-monitored system by year's end.

According to research by Parks Associates, 23% of the self-monitored systems are fee-based with an average cost this year of $9 per month while 22% also include home control. By 2024, the average monthly fees will slide down to $8.50 while 34% will have home control add-on services.

The adoption of smart home devices reflects the overall Internet of Things (IoT) trend. A recent Parks Associates study revealed that in homes with a broadband connection, 26% now own a smart home device, up from 19% at the end of 2015. The research firm said that over the past two years, smart home device ownership “has more than doubled,” forecasting that “companies will sell nearly 55 million smart home devices in 2020.”

Mirai, and other similar attacks, could become an even larger problem as more consumers continue adopt IoT devices at the home. Indeed, IAB revealed in its recent study that two-thirds, or 62 percent, of American consumers own at least one IoT connected device. Meantime, Parks Associates reported that nearly half of U.S. households plan to purchase a smart home product in the next 12 months.

Smart home applications may still be seen as a novelty, but in-home security is on the rise with Parks Associates forecasting that about 24 percent of U.S. broadband households will have an IP camera by 2020. The research firm added that over 50 percent will have a smart home controller and 26 percent will have a home security system.
