The Multiple OTT Service Explosion

OTT video is firmly established in the U.S. entertainment marketplace, and new research from Parks Associates only puts an exclamation point on the new reality of how Americans consume video entertainment.

More than two-thirds of U.S. broadband households have an OTT service. But, it is the percentage of U.S. broadband households that have more than one subscription that is more noteworthy.

OTT Annual Churn Rate Dips Slightly

This suggests that the all-important churn rate for services such as Netflix, Amazon Video and Hulu isn’t fluctuating — with 8 out of every 10 U.S. broadband household that has such a service sticking with it.

The data comes from an annual review of U.S. broadband households by Parks Associates.

OTT Sees Healthy Gains In Broadband Homes

Parks’ OTT Video Market Tracker also shows that Netflix, WWE Network and Hulu have the highest word-of-mouth consumer promotion scores.

Parks looked at consumer behavior during Q3 2014 and compared all subsequent quarters through Q2 2016. The number of available services and consumer awareness are both increasing, despite password sharing growing by approximately 8% over that same time, Parks finds.

Television news: Gray, TBN, Comcast/NBCUniversal

Ultrahigh definition TV, or UDF, is expected to be in use in more than 46M households within four years, according to Parks Associates. It will be adopted by younger viewers attracted to its enhanced features and “slightly” lower rates than traditional MVPDs.
