The voice interface, which was the talk of Parks Associates Connections Conference, may offer an alternative to the clumsiness of trying to manipulate virtual objects with one’s hands. At that conference it was suggested researchers are moving beyond basic voice recognition to understand context and emotion (e.g. you say, “I’m leaving in a hurried tone” and your voice assistant says, “Don’t forget your jacket, as it is going to be cold later tonight”).

Could the days of the set-top be numbered? Stuart Sikes suggests that was one of the insights from the Parks Associates’ CONNECTIONS™ Summit at CES. As he points out, smart TV’s may soon eliminate the need for the set-top. He suggests that home monitoring and control and energy management have moved beyond standards and are moving towards commercialization.

It’s just getting started, but there already many alternatives for the consumer to create a smart home experience. Tom Kerber of Parks Associates points out that many of the smart home developments shown at International CES are from upstart companies that have devices and don’t necessarily rely on the service revenue. An an example, he mentions a connected oven that includes a full audio and video system. He calls it a very exciting time, in terms of new product introduction.
