New Europe IoT research finds 55% of U.K. broadband households have a set-top box versus 20% in Germany

New research from Parks Associates shows adoption of set-top boxes varies significantly across Europe, where 55% of U.K. broadband households have a set-top, compared to 36% in Spain and 20% in Germany. By comparison, the penetration of Internet-connected CE is 54% of German broadband households, 67% in the U.K., and 69% in Spain.

Parks Associates will address strategies for service providers and pay-TV operators to expand their presence within the connected home at CONNECTIONS™ Europe: Monetizing Strategies for the Connected Home, 18-19 November, Amsterdam.

"In Spain, 71% of broadband households have a gaming console, and 54% of have a computer connected to a TV, so there are multiple routes for pay-TV providers to reach consumers at home," said Brett Sappington, director, research, Parks Associates. "At CONNECTIONS™ Europe, we will discuss ways to develop strategies appropriate to each country and culture."

The two-day conference, featuring keynotes from Sky Deutschland, Ericsson, Icontrol Networks, and Deutsche Telekom, features European consumer research based on a 3Q 2014 survey highlighting ownership and use cases for connected entertainment devices and smart home solutions.

“HBO and Netflix have both announced plans to offer their services through cable set-top boxes,” Sappington said. “At CONNECTIONS™ Europe, we will analyze these latest strategies and different scenarios for the set-top, including the potential for a full-featured gateway that would manage household user profiles and handle conditional access, security, data, and other functions.”
