Personalized services, place-shifting, and multiroom DVR functions a key focus at CONNECTIONS™ Europe

Value-added services session features IBM, Cisco, Accedo Broadband, Cloudberry Associates

The integration of interactive services and two-way communications with TV services has become a key part of service provider strategies worldwide, according to Parks Associates. The international research firm is hosting CONNECTIONS™ Europe on November 15-16, 2010, at the Mövenpick Hotel in Amsterdam, and the agenda includes the session “Value-added Services & the Video Ecosystem.”

This session will examine strategies behind advanced video service options, including online video on the TV, TV Everywhere, and hybrid set-top boxes that offer broadcast and broadband/IPTV options.

“In 2010, there are over 1.3 billion households worldwide receiving TV services, and over the next five years, IPTV services will experience the highest cumulative aggregate growth rate (CAGR) in the television service market,” said Stuart Sikes, President, Parks Associates. “To stay competitive, and build ARPU, providers are evaluating a variety of future features and value-added service options that leverage digital technologies.”

Parks Associates reports France and Germany trail only the U.S. in VOD content and many other countries are increasing their VOD offerings. Magyar Telekom in Hungary now offers VOD services as part of its IPTV rollout, and Kabel Deutschland is targeting late 2010 for a VOD launch. In China, CDM is rolling out VOD services nationally using international content from Japan and Korea.

“Robust VOD services are the first step in the expansion of TV services,” Sikes said. “As more households adopt home networking, TV services will expand to include two-way communications and interactive features.”
