More Than 50% Of U.S. Broadband Households Will Have A Smart Home Controller By 2020

Parks Associates today announced three new NUMBERS™ products focused on key IoT categories, including U.S. and global forecasts for IP cameras, home security, and smart home controllers through 2020. The firm estimates nearly 24% of U.S. broadband households will have an IP camera by 2020, while more than 50% will have a smart home controller and 26% will have a home security system.

Smart Home Devices Slow To Catch On In U.S. Broadband Households

A new IoT research report from Parks Associates revealed that less than 30 percent of U.S. broadband households actually know where to purchase smart home products or services. What's more, about 40 percent of the households the research firm surveyed said they prefer to purchase smart home products at retail outlets, particularly from home improvement stores such as Home Depot or Lowes.

AT&T Counters Cable Threat With Unlimited Broadband, But For Subscribers It Comes At A Cost

Despite the added fee, the unlimited plan will resonate with a distinct group of users, particularly gamers and online video addicts. Gamers require a broadband connection to handle the latency-sensitive nature of real-time sessions.

"The unlimited data plan is likely for the uber-data users that far exceed their data allowance each month," said Brett Sappington, director of research for Parks Associates, in a research note.

AT&T To Offer Unlimited U-verse Data Usage Option, Increases Caps On Other Tiers

Brett Sappington, director of Research for Parks Associates, said in a research note that AT&T's move makes sense as it reflects the fact that users are leveraging their broadband connection to not only send and receive e-mails, but increasingly to view bandwidth hungry streaming video content on You Tube and Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX).

Smart home products, systems to reach $11M support requests by 2019, says analyst firm

As more U.S. broadband households adopt connected devices, the need for support services will rise. According to a Parks Associates white paper, smart home products and systems will generate over seven million support requests in the U.S. in 2015 and approximately 11 million in 2019. Today, U.S. broadband households now own an average of seven-and-a-half connected computing and entertainment devices, and 18 percent own at least one smart home device.

Parks: One-fourth of U.S. broadband homes see value in home monitoring services

Value-added monitoring services may still be in the development stage, but recent research conducted by Parks Associates reveals that about 25 percent of U.S. households that have a broadband connection see utility in value-added monitoring services.

Respondents to the research firm's survey said that they "find at least one value-added monitoring service very appealing."

Week in research: Roku rules streaming media device world; IPTV gains on cable

The number of broadband-enabled households using streaming media devices like Roku or Apple TV stands at 14 percent, double that of 2011. Parks Associates reports that Roku is the most-used streaming device with 37 percent of households surveyed using it, versus 24 percent primarily using Apple TV.
