45% of Western European broadband homes have smart TV

Parks Associates research finds 45% of European broadband households own a smart TV, with the highest percentage in Germany, where over 50% of broadband households have this internet-connected CE device.

330m 4K UHD TVs sold globally by 2019

More than 330 million 4K UltraHD TVs will be sold globally by the end of 2019, an increase from two million in 2013.

This is according to a new report from Parks Associates, Connected CE: Trends and Innovation, which notes that, of US broadband households planning to purchase a flat-panel TV in 2015, 56% think that 4K picture quality is an important feature.

Over half of US broadband homes have OTT

Over 50% of consumers in US broadband households subscribe to an OTT video service, according to Parks Associates.

57% of consumers in US broadband households subscribe to an OTT video service, such as Netflix or Hulu Plus. The research firm reports the average US broadband household spends $9 per month on Internet video, up from $7 in 2012.

Streaming devices in 26% of US homes

Ownership and usage of connected devices is growing among US broadband households, according to Parks Associates.

26% own a streaming media device, 34% own a smart TV and 16% own a smart home device.

The average household spends over $6 per month on subscription internet video services.

Chromecast eclipses Apple TV

Roku remains the leading streaming player in the United States, but Google Chromecast has knocked Apple TV into second place, according to Parks Associates.

The researcher says that 10% of US households have purchased a streaming media device so far in 2014 – already matching available sales data from 2013 as a whole.

Roku claims 29% of sales, with Google Chromecast on 20% and the more expensive Apple TV on 17%. New entrant Amazon Fire TV is in fourth place with 10%.

Streaming media devices forecasted to be hot gift items

Smart watches and connected entertainment devices, including game consoles and streaming media devices, will be the most popular gifts for the holiday season in the US.

High pay-TV adoption in UK and Germany

Pay-TV adoption in Germany and the UK has reached 86% and 78% of broadband households, respectively, according to Parks Associates.

Spanish adoption is much lower, with 47% of broadband households receiving only local broadcast channels.

PC-to-TV connections in Europe outpace US

Adoption of PC-to-TV connections in Europe exceeds adoption in the US.

Among broadband households, 54% in Spain and 38% in the UK and Germany have a PC connected to the TV, compared to 32% in the US.

“Growth of broadband services and expansion of OTT services are driving systematic changes throughout Europe’s video industry,” said Brett Sappington, Director, Research, Parks Associates.
