Half a billion Mice lead to Harmony
The latest Harmony universal remote released featured a touchscreen with six programmable soft keys plus a traditional button layout that can be set-up by plugging the device into a PC via a USB port and a Web connection. This feature allows you to program several functions into a single button such as changing all of the inputs on your home theatre set-up to, say, watch a DVD.
The acquisition of Intrigue is heralded as part of Logitech’s strategy to expand its presence in the digital living room. The company already supplies controllers and audio products for gaming console.
“The market for convergence and advanced entertainment remote controls that provide simple solutions for using today’s complex entertainment systems will grow as consumers become aware of them,” said Tricia Parks, president of market research firm Parks Associates. “Our early estimates indicate that the worldwide market for these types of remote controls will be approximately US$500 million in 2004, with annual future growth in double digits.”
