Media Servers - Panacea or Placebo
As the race to be the de facto home ‘media server’ platform gathers momentum, researcher Parks Associates is predicting the race may not be either PC or CE, saying homes will have more than one.
The astounding success of DVD players and digital cameras is forcing CE developers to seek new ways to increase margins and profits, argues Parks Associates. Media servers could be the solution as they would supplement the bottom line trough the provision of content streams as is already happening with digital music. No matter what direction the market takes, there is one thing that must happen, PC and CE-centric media server solutions will cost more than the average home computer or DVD player, says Parks.
