Roku trumps Apple TV usage

The Roku internet TV streaming set-top box usage is outstripping Apple’s equivalent in the US, according to new research.

The number of US broadband households with a streaming video media device, such as a Roku or an Apple TV, has doubled since 2011, reaching 14% in 2013, says Parks Associates.

Among these households, 37% primarily use Roku compared to 24% that primarily use an Apple TV, according to a survey of 10,000 such homes conducted by Parks in Q1 this year.

This is despite the fact that Apple is thought to have sold around 10 million Apple TVs, while Roku announced in April it had shifted five million boxes stateside.

Roku raised US$60m in new funding earlier this year while Apple has this week has acquired Matcha.tv, a video recommendation app that draws together available programming from broadcast, cable and the web.

Parks predicts the number of connected TV devices sold worldwide will reach 330 million annually by 2017, almost double the number to be sold in 2013, with Google’s recently launched Chromecast streaming dongle also expected to be among the beneficiaries of this growth.
