But those types of blood-and-guts, in-depth titles are the exception rather than the rule on smart phones and tablets, said Pietro Macchiarella, a research analyst who tracks the video game industry for Dallas-based Parks Associates.

“One of the things that we’ve seen is the type of games that people play on the smart phones, at the moment, tend to be pretty casual games,” he said.

And he said the sales declines for the DS and PSP are probably largely due to gamers simply waiting for the successor consoles coming out this year.

Macchiarella said phones and handheld game consoles could eventually merge into a single device, with phones and tablets becoming powerful enough to duplicate the features that have so far been reserved for specialized game machines.

“Eventually, I can see a convergence,” he said.
