Top 10 media companies include 6 locals

New York City-area companies were a major presence on a list of top 25 media firms released by communications analytics firm SNL Kagan: nine of the 25—including six of the top ten—are headquartered in the region. But Colorado-based Liberty Media Corp. overtook Disney for the No. 1 spot.

Vimeo commits $10M to luring filmmakers

Vimeo generates revenue by charging for subscriptions to upload high-quality videos that producers can sell or rent to viewers. A $60-a-year subscription eliminates banner ads while a $199-a-year subscription, known as Vimeo Pro, allows users to upload high-quality video and get access to tools that package and sell content to viewers. Vimeo also receives a 10% portion of the pay-for-play sales.

Time Warner's blackout of CBS enters third day

Time Warner Cable, based in New York, has encouraged customers to sign up with Aereo Inc. to watch CBS. Aereo is a startup service, backed by billionaire Barry Diller, that sells access to the broadcast networks online for $8 a month. Aereo, which pays no retransmission fees to broadcasters, is currently being sued by CBS.
