‘Smart home’ technology goes mainstream

Less than 5 percent of U.S. households, or about 5.8 million homes, had some form of remote monitoring and control system in place at the end of 2011, according to Parks Associates, a market research firm in Dallas. By 2014 that is expected to grow to 9.3 percent.
