Global OTT revenues to reach $19bn

Global over-the-top video revenues will increase from nearly US$9 billion in 2014 to more than US$19 billion in 2019, according to Parks Associates.

The research firm said that currently 57% of broadband households in both the UK and the US subscribe to an OTT video service, compared to 29% in Spain and 24% in Germany.

Account sharing a ‘challenge’ for SVOD

Some 11% of all US broadband households rely exclusively on shared accounts when using subscription OTT services like Netflix, with account sharing a “lingering challenge,” according to Parks Associates.

The research firm said that 8% of US broadband households are using a subscription OTT account held by someone outside of their home and 6% are exclusively using shared accounts to access OTT services – equating to 11% of all households.

Netflix confirms new European launches

In Netflix’s Q4 2013 earnings announcement in January it first indicated that it planned to “embark on a substantial European expansion” later this year.

Roughly 50% to 60% of US households that use connected consumer electronics devices also now subscribe to Netflix, according to recent research by Parks Associates.

Netflix is reportedly set to launch in Australia next year.
