Nearly two-thirds of smart TV owners hooking up

Just under two-thirds (63%) of smart TV owners are now hooking them up to the Internet, according to research firm Parks Associates – contradicting the popular belief that most owners do not do so.

The report estimates that just over a quarter (26%) of US broadband homes now own a smart TV. A large majority (79%) of owners are thought to use their smart TV to watch premium online video on a monthly basis.

TV Everywhere on the rise in Western Europe

Over two-thirds (70%) of pay-TV subscribers in Western Europe are now able to receive a TV Everywhere service, according to new figures from US research firm Parks Associates.

Despite widespread availability however, average revenue per user (ARPU) for these services remains low, forcing many operators to test new business models such as à la carte pricing.

Over two-thirds of Smart TV owners “regular app users”

App developers are increasingly targeting Smart TV platforms as their next significant growth area as nearly 80% of owners in the US regularly use apps on them, according to Parks Associates, which recommends that developers continue to target video and gaming apps.

US IPTV subs wax, as cable subs wane

Telcos will be leading the next growth phase for pay-TV services in the US, with the number of IPTV subscribers there set to increase from 8.8mn at the end of 2011 to 18.6mn in 2017, according to new figures from US analysts Parks Associates.

Satellite operators’ share of the US pay-TV market is expected to drop slightly to 30% by 2017, while cable’s market share will fall more steeply to 52%, and IPTV’s stake will increase to 17%.

AT&T adds 198k U-verse TV subs in Q3

US telco AT&T had reached 4.3mn active subscribers to its managed IPTV service ‘U-verse TV’ by the end of the third quarter of this year, having added 198,000 customers in the three-month period.

Operator-provided multiscreen services up 80% in Western Europe

Pay-TV subscribers in Western Europe are becomingly increasingly likely to have access to multiscreen services, with coverage increasing by more than 80% over the past year, according to new research from US firm Parks Associates.
At present, two-thirds (66%) of Western European pay-TV subscribers are able to get these services, compared to only 36% in mid-2011 – a considerable increase in such a short period of time.

US connected home service bundles to generate half a billion dollars this year

Bundles of connected home services provided by US communications service providers (CSPs) will generate around US$ 500mn this year, according to new research by Parks Associates.
