US cloud DVR subscribers to reach 24 million by 2018

The total number of cloud DVR subscribers in the US will exceed 4.6 million by the end of 2015 and total 24 million by 2018, according to Parks Associates.

The research found that 51% of pay TV subscribers said they are very interested in having unlimited space to store DVR recordings, implying “strong consumer demand for cloud-based DVR services”.

OTT account sharing a ‘lingering challenge,’ says Parks

Some 11% of all US broadband households rely exclusively on shared accounts when using subscription OTT services like Netflix, with account sharing a “lingering challenge,” according to Parks Associates.

The research firm said that 8% of US broadband households are using a subscription OTT account held by someone outside of their home and 6% are exclusively using shared accounts to access OTT services – equating to 11% of all households.

OTT video subscribed to by 57% of US broadband homes

Some 57% of consumers in US broadband households subscribe to an over-the-top video service like Netflix or Hulu Plus, according to Parks Associates.

The research, released ahead of the NAB show in Las Vegas next week, claims that the average US broadband household now spends US$9 (€8.40) per month on Internet video, up from US$7 in 2012.

Pay TV industry experiencing ‘slow crisis’, says Parks Associates

The pay TV industry is experiencing a “slow crisis in terms of paying customers,” with 7% of US broadband households with a pay TV service planning to cancel their TV subscription, according to Parks Associates.

Almost a fifth of US homes tipped to take HBO’s OTT service

Roughly 17% of US broadband households would be likely to subscribe to HBO’s forthcoming over-the-top video service, according to new research by Parks Associates.

The research firm said that among those likely to subscribe, 91% are currently pay TV subscribers, while roughly 50% would cancel their pay TV service after subscribing to HBO’s OTT service.

More than a third of US homes to buy a smart device this year

Some 37% of US broadband households intend to buy one or more smart devices in 2015, according to research firm Parks Associates.

Parks’ smart home and internet of things research claims that 26% of US broadband households already own a streaming device, with 34% owning a smart TV and 16% a smart home device.

The average household spend on subscription internet video services stands at more than US$6 per month, according to Parks.

Streaming media devices bought by 10% of US homes in 2014

Some 10% of US broadband homes bought a streaming player or stick in the first three quarters of 2014 with Roku retaining its lead of the market, according to Parks Associates.

The research said that Roku accounted for 29% of US streaming device sales, followed by Chromecast with 20%, which overtook Apple TV at 17%. Amazon’s Fire TV took fourth place with 10% of sales.

Streaming media devices to top holiday gift sales

Streaming media devices, games consoles and other connected entertainment goods, as well smart watches, will be the most popular gifts this holiday season, according to Parks Associates.

Parks said that 37% of smart watches, 25% of streaming media devices and 20% of gaming consoles acquired in 2014 were received as gifts.
