Research reveals latest stats for smart TV & -watch uptake

According to new research from Parks Associates, smart TV adoption increased by 31% in one year, meaning that now over one-third of US broadband households have a smart TV.

Parks Associates analysts report that over 70% of smart TV owners have the device connected to the Internet. Also, nearly two-thirds of people shopping for a flat-panel TV this year plan to buy a smart TV. These trends show the smart TV has a significant role in the connected home and is a key device to extend new services and experiences to consumers.

The CE Week Conference brings together experts and analysts from across the CE and home entertainment industries to examine the status of various advanced technologies rolling out to consumers. Kraus’s session focuses on the state of smart TVs and smart TV apps as well as how companies are using this technology to enhance their product offerings and enable the delivery of new entertainment experiences.

Meanwhile, in additional research published today, Parks Associates, ahead of its upcoming digital health webcast, announced that 2% of U.S. broadband households purchased a smart watch in 2013, with another 4% very likely to purchase a smart watch in the next 12 months.

The research, including a 1Q 2014 survey of 10,000 U.S. broadband households, found Samsung as the leading smart watch brand. Among smart watch buyers, 20% purchased directly from the manufacturer, 18% from Amazon, and 17% from Best Buy. Nearly one-half of consumers who acquired a smart watch in 2013 received it as a gift.
