"AT&T is on the leading edge of what will be a big play," said Bill Ablondi, an analyst with Parks Associates, a research firm that focuses on the digital-living market. "There are a number of players lining up at the gate. We're going to see a lot of it after the first of the year."

Companies that are most interested in offering services like this are traditional security companies, garage-door opener makers and cable and TV companies that already have infrastructure in place. They see an opportunity to bundle remote monitoring with other services they already offer — and charge a little more, Ablondi says.
