What is Wi-Fi 6 and why you're going to want it

I have, let me see, seven Wi-Fi enabled devices currently running in my home office. That includes a tablet, a smartphone, five laptops, and a Roku streaming the last episode of Game of Thrones. That's about par. According to Parks Associates, the average home in 2017 had nine Wi-Fi equipped devices. Offices have far more. That means distributing the internet to so much gear has become a real problem. That's where Wi-Fi 6 comes in.

Cord-cutters rejoice: Sling TV starts up

At CES, Dish CEO Joe Clayton said that Sling TV was "aimed squarely at the millennial audience -- those 18- to 35-year-olds, who represent a market virtually untouched by the pay TV industry today." I'm sure that millennials won't be the only ones flocking to Sling TV.

Reports show it's becoming a cord cutter's world

Once upon a time, we watched three or four fuzzy over-the-air (OTA) TV channels with a pair of rabbit ears. Then, we got cable, and after that we got satellite — hundreds of channels and nothing to watch with an ever-increasing bill. Now, many of us are moving to à la carte Internet selections.

Qualcomm baking Dolby Digital Plus directly onto chips to save time, money

Citing a company report about mobile and sound technologies, Dolby found that (in the United States, at least) younger consumers were the most likely to say that audio quality on entertainment features is a consideration when purchasing a mobile device.

Tablets boosting mobile gaming, in-app purchases

The whitepaper, Trends in Digital Gaming: Free-to-Play, Social, and Mobile Games, points out that this demographic has grown from 7 percent in 2008 to 18 percent by 2011.

Growing interest in tablets is largely behind this as 71 percent of adults and 79 percent of teens are said to play games on tablets for at least one hour each month.

As tablet sales rise, game developers will place further focus on designing more complex games for this platform, facilitating a new and ...read more
