Pay TV uptake in UK and Germany outstrips Spain

Pay TV adoption in Germany and the UK now stand at 86% and 78% of broadband households compared to just 53% of broadband homes in Spain, according to Parks Associates.

“Spanish broadband households show enthusiasm for online video, with our research showing 54% watch free online video at least once a month, compared to 40% in the UK and 26% in Germany,” said Parks Associates research director Brett Sappington.

Non-linear video viewing outpaces linear in the US

The average US broadband household now watches more than 17 hours of non-linear video per-week, compared to just 11.5 hours of linear video, according to Parks Associates.

The new research claims that on the TV, non-linear video now accounts for 49% of video consumed. Among 18 to 24 year-olds, 60% of TV video viewed is non-linear.

4K pay TV services tipped to reach 46 million subscribers by 2018

More than 46 million households worldwide will subscribe to a 4K, ultra high definition pay TV service by 2018, according to new research by Parks Associates.

The research firm predicts that pay TV providers will deploy 4K services as “a differentiator”, particularly among younger consumers who are more likely to use newer pay TV features like TV Everywhere and cloud DVR.

Almost two fifths of US broadband homes use transactional VoD

The research firm said that roughly two thirds of Amazon Prime Instant Video subscribers also rent or buy titles through Amazon, with the “vast majority” of SVoD customers also making a la carte purchases.

“Subscription services are the most popular form of OTT video, but a transactional service that offers a wide selection of titles and easy-to-use controls can score with consumers and create new revenues,” said Barbara Kraus, director of research, Parks Associates.

OTT services subscribed to by 55% of US broadband homes

Some 55% of US broadband households now subscribe to an OTT video service, such as Netflix, according to Parks Associates.

The research firm noted that consumer interest in cloud DVR technology is also growing, with 45% of US broadband households finding this “very appealing.”

Games consoles the main connected device in 28% of US homes

Some 28% of US broadband households use an internet-connected games console as their primary connected consumer electronics (CE) device, according to Parks Associates.

The research claims that among these primary console users, roughly 75% use the gaming device to access non-gaming content online at least weekly, and nearly 40% do so for more than 10 hours per week.

More than 40% of UK and US homes use DVRs

More than 40% of broadband households in the US and UK and over 30% of broadband households in Belgium and France have a DVR, according to new research by Parks Associates.

In its ‘Cloud DVR: The New Face of Television’ report, Parks says that more than 45% of US pay TV subscribers find cloud DVR technology “very appealing” and that consumers show “particular interest” in unlimited storage space and two-week catch-up services.

Roku widens gap over Apple TV in the US

Parks Associates’ ‘The Evolving Market fro Streaming Media Devices’ report claims that Roku is the most used streaming media player in the US with 44% use among US broadband households, compared to 26% for Apple TV.

This gap has widened since 2013, when 37% of streaming media player owners used Roku most, followed by 24% for Apple TV.
