New research from Parks Associates shows the average US broadband household now watches more than 17 hours of non-linear video per week, compared to 11.5 hours of linear video.
“Non-linear video accounts for 49% of the video consumed on the TV, and it is already the majority, 60%, of TV video viewed by consumers 18-24,” said Barbara Kraus, Director of Research, Parks Associates.

64% of US broadband households have an internet-connected CE and 55% have an OTT service subscription, according to Parks Associates.
The connected TV area is poised for strong growth especially following HBO’s announcement that it will launch a stand-alone HBO Go service.
“The HBO OTT service announcement should not really be a surprise given the overall trends in the video service space,” said Brett Sappington, director, research, Parks Associates.
More than 46 million households worldwide will subscribe to a 4K UHD pay-TV service by 2018, according to Parks Associates.
Pay-TV providers will deploy this service as a differentiator, especially among younger consumers who are more likely to use new pay-TV features, such as TV Everywhere and cloud DVR, but also have slightly lower subscription rates for pay-TV services. In the US, 82% of consumers 18-22 have a pay-TV subscription, compared to 87% among older consumers.
37% of US broadband households regularly use transactional services for OTT video, such as online video rentals and downloads, according to Parks Associates.
The vast majority of consumers making these a la carte purchases also have a streaming video subscription, emphasizing the potential role of transactional services to supplement subscription OTT. Over 45% of US pay-TV subscribers find cloud PVR technology very appealing, according to new research from Parks Associates.
The report Cloud DVR: The New Face of Television notes that consumers show particular interest in unlimited storage space and two-week catch-up services for video. Among US broadband households with a streaming media player, 44% use a Roku player the most versus 26% that use Apple TV the most, according to new research from Parks Associates.
The report, The Evolving Market For Streaming Media Devices, is showing that more than 25% of US households will have a streaming media player by 2015, with continued robust sales and new entries such as Amazon Fire TV driving expansion of this connected CE category.
