Adoption of smart home controllers in Western Europe will exceed 5 million households by 2019

Parks Associates to present consumer trends and insights into smart home growth  at DECT ULE Technology Summit on May 31

New research forecasts from Parks Associates show that adoption of smart home controllers in Western Europe will reach 5.1 million households by 2019, surpassing adoption in Asia-Pacific, which was second only to North America in 2016 with more than 2.5 million households with a smart home controller. Erik Overbeeke, European Partner Alliance, Parks Associates, will discuss the latest smart home trends, innovations, and barriers to adoption next week at DECT ULE Technology Summit on May 31 in Amsterdam.

“Consumer adoption of connected solutions is creating new opportunities throughout Europe for recurring revenues through monitoring, streaming, and energy management services,” Overbeeke said. “However, there are barriers to adoption, including interoperability, ease of use, and consumer perception of value as well as privacy and security concerns.”

“DECT Forum and the ULE Alliance are excited about the potential that the smart home market is starting to display. With ULE now starting mass deployment at some of the largest telecom operators, we can continue to leverage our huge installed base in the home,” said Ulrich Grote, Chairman, ULE Alliance.

Overbeeke’s presentation “Global Connected Living: Adoption, Technology, Engagement,” which takes place at the B. Amsterdam, will provide an overview of the European and U.S. smart home markets, including the drivers and barriers for smart home adoption, new technology developments enabling the smart home such as voice control and interoperability solutions, and valuable use cases for the connected home.

Research from Parks Associates shows smart home device penetration will remain well below 50% adoption for many device categories in 2017:

  • Smart thermostats will reach 13% in North America and 1.5% in Western Europe.
  • Smart light bulb penetration will reach 12% in North America and 5% in Western Europe.
  • Smart outlets/switches/dimmers will reach 7% in North America and 4% in Western Europe.
  • Networked/IP cameras will reach 15% in North America and 10% in Western Europe.

DECT ULE Technology Summitaddresses recent developments in connected home and enterprise applications and provides a technology outlook for ULE, a low-power wireless technology that enables simple, reliable, and cost-effective connected home and business platforms.
