Nearly 50% of U.S. broadband households use a personal assistant through an application or dedicated device

New whitepaper examines voice-first landscape and role of voice to alleviate complexity in the smart home user experience

Parks Associates recently released a new whitepaper, Enabling Voice in the Smart Home, with research showing 49% of U.S. broadband households use a personal assistant through an app or dedicated device, which is a key use case for a voice-based user experience. The whitepaper, sponsored by the ULE Alliance, examines the influence of the voice-first interface on the adoption of connected products and presents market strategies for long-term success in the voice technology market. Currently 10% of U.S. broadband households own a smart speaker with a personal assistant, such as an Amazon Echo or Google Home.

“Collectively, companies are competing to stay in the race for dominance in the voice-first market,” said Dina Abdelrazik, Research Analyst, Parks Associates. “Amazon, Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Samsung continue to announce new product enhancements in order to stay ahead of the demand for voice technologies. As the voice-first landscape expands, we will see voice capabilities embedded into a variety of devices, from appliances to thermostats to lighting. Voice alleviates complexity in the user experience for these products, and as a result, voice will serve as a prime differentiator in the user experience for the smart home.”

The whitepaper details strong correlation between ownership of smart speakers and smart home devices. It details current market activities and the architecture of voice technology, including the path to scale up use cases from the smart home to safety and wellness and connected health.

“Emergence and the rapid growth of the voice-first market deliver a great promise to consumers, as it brings a completely new and natural way of interaction with the digital world and their smart homes in particular. The ULE technology, with highly secure and long-range communication and integrated voice support, is well positioned to extend the voice-first use to a broad variety of devices at home, with solid and stable communication and long battery life. In fact, several members of the ULE Alliance have already developed IoT products with embedded voice support, and more are on the way,” said Avi Barel, Business Development Director at the ULE Alliance.

Enabling Voice in the Smart Home addresses several key topics:

  • Business and technical strategies for creating a voice-first user experience
  • Consumer adoption of voice technology in the home
  • The emergence of new use cases
  • New opportunities for voice in connected products
  • Reducing the amount of power required for voice functionalities
