32% of households with 3,000 square feet or more own a smart product

Parks Associates President and Research Director present home systems research at CEDIA, October 15

Parks Associates research finds a strong correlation between home size and adoption of smart products as 32% of U.S. broadband households with 3,000 or more square feet own at least one of these devices, such as smart thermostats, light bulbs, and cameras. The firm’s Smart Product Adoption reports, by comparison, less than 20% of all U.S. broadband households own a smart product. The research firm will present new connected home systems research at CEDIA EXPO 2015, October 14-17 in Dallas, Texas.

“Consumers with larger houses are also much more likely to own more than one type of smart home device,” said Tom Kerber, Director, Research, Home Controls & Energy, Parks Associates. “Households with 3,000 or more square feet own on average 2.5 different smart home products, while the average U.S. broadband household has less than two. As the middle market for smart home products expands, the custom installer channel has a key role to play in encouraging adoption by driving awareness and ensuring interoperability at the end-user level.”

Stuart Sikes, President, Parks Associates, will present “The State of the Connected Home” on Thursday, October 15 at 9:00 A.M., followed by an interactive panel led by Kerber. "Winning Strategies for Mid-Market Home Systems" will focus on the keys to success for smart home controls and strategies for custom installers to apply their high-end expertise in the expanding mid-market for smart solutions. Kerber will be joined by the following panelists:

  • Paul Williams, Vice President, Lighting & Comfort Products, Control4
  • Gordon van Zuiden, Founder, cyberManor
  • Michael Smith, Vice President, Sales, Lutron
  • Cat Toomey, Director, Marketing, URC
  • Mike Everett, Vice President, Sales and Marketing – Americas, Remote Technologies Inc.

"Control4 views the mid-market to be absolutely essential to the eventual ubiquity of the smart home, and we are leveraging the expertise of our 3,400+ dealers to educate those consumers on exactly how to accomplish their goals using connected devices and solutions,” said Paul Williams, Vice President, Lighting & Comfort Products, Control4. “We can’t wait to discuss the results of the recent Parks Associates research surrounding this topic with the panel at CEDIA.”

“Most of our client’s homes in Silicon Valley are over 4,000 square feet,” said Gordon van Zuiden, Founder, cyberManor. “If we define smart home devices as networked connected IP devices, then cyberManor is installing, on average, 25 or more of these products in our client’s homes today. Office computers, laptops, phones, tablets, routers, wireless access points, printers, smart TVs, streaming entertainment set-top boxes, lighting control, digital cameras, smart thermostats, and whole house music systems - these network-connected products are now in every one of our clients' homes. We expect that the number of network-connected IP devices to increase to over 50 devices within the next few years as the Internet of Things becomes pervasive in today’s modern home.”

"The ever-increasing availability of network-connected devices for smart homes presents a tremendous opportunity for custom installers to expand their customer base into the middle market," said Mike Everett, Vice President, Sales and Marketing - Americas, Remote Technologies, Inc. "On this panel, we look forward to sharing how integrators can successfully sell the benefits of control systems that incorporate these products into a cohesive, easy-to-use control experience for the end user."
