Number of cloud-DVR subscribers worldwide will increase to 24 million by 2018

Parks Associates research director to provide insight into emerging cloud-DVR market in upcoming Imagine Communications webinar

Recent Parks Associates research shows the total number of cloud-DVR subscribers worldwide will exceed 4.6 million in 2015 and total 24 million by 2018. Brett Sappington, Director, Research, Parks Associates, will provide insight into the emergence of cloud DVR and the rapidly evolving video content delivery market in the webinar "Cloud-DVR – Reinventing Video Delivery and Forging New Business Models," sponsored by Imagine Communications, on Tuesday, March 31 at 10:00 am ET.

“Time-shifting content has led to an evolution and new challenges in television business models,” Sappington said. “Though the basic features of the DVR are the same, moving the service to the cloud is surprisingly complex. However, it opens up a variety of new opportunities for consumers and operators. Beyond expanding storage capacity, a cloud-based DVR impacts viewing features, revenue opportunities, and rights agreements with content creators.”

The webcast will feature Sappington; Alan Breznick, Contributing Analyst, Heavy Reading; Glenn LeBrun, Vice President, Product and Strategic Marketing, Imagine Communications; and Andy Salo, Vice President, Product Line Management, Imagine Communications. The webinar will also focus on strategies for content creators, broadcasters, aggregators, and distributors to benefit by deploying cloud-DVR technology.

“Operators are interested in deploying cloud DVR because these solutions will reduce set-top box costs, eliminate costly replacements, and provide support for enhanced features, which will open new revenue opportunities,” Sappington said. “There are risks in cloud DVR expansion, as there are when deploying any new technologies, alongside unique challenges from increased network data traffic and negotiations for content rights. Our research focuses on strategies for providers to overcome these challenges.”

As a director of research at Parks Associates, Sappington leads the services research team, including access and entertainment services, digital media, OTT, cloud media, video gaming, and technical support services. He is an expert in worldwide television and broadband services. His personal research focuses on the activities and trends among operators and the market forces affecting their businesses. Sappington is a regular speaker and moderator at international industry events.
