Parks Associates Launches OTT Video Market Tracker at INTX

75% of North American OTT video service providers use subscription-based business model

International research firm Parks Associates launched its new service OTT Video Market Tracker this week at INTX: The Internet & Television Expo today in Chicago. The service includes an exhaustive analysis of market trends and profiles of the nearly 100 over-the-top video service providers in the U.S. and Canada, such as Netflix, HBO, YouTube, and Amazon, with updated deliverables throughout the year documenting the following:

  • Service features, including content offered
  • Unique aspects and key service differentiators
  • Penetration and estimated subscribers, reported quarterly
  • Pricing and business models
  • Updates on existing players
  • Profiles and industry implications for new services, including analyst insights

Brett Sappington, Director of Research, Parks Associates, is the lead analyst for the OTT Video Market Tracker, which features a new way to blend company profiles with industry research data and analysis of competing players’ strengths and weaknesses in the space.

Sappington is participating in the session "Digital Dividends: The Future of Content and Distribution Economics" at the INTX Talks Panel on May 6 at 10:15 a.m. in Room W471, Level 4, McCormick Place West. Peter Stern, EVP & Chief Product, Time Warner Cable, will moderate the discussion on new opportunities in TV Everywhere, OTT, and 4K and successful business models for the fast-changing digital media marketplace.

According to OTT Video Market Tracker, 75% of North American OTT video service providers use a subscription-based business model, either exclusively subscription or combined with advertising or transactions. The popularity of subscription models has allowed OTT to stay the lowest portion of household video expenditures even though it now accounts for one-third of video consumption among U.S. broadband households. The research firm predicts providers will increasingly rely on advertising to make up for the revenue shortfall.
